  • Author & Book: Russell Shorto, The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America
  • Who: The discussion will be led by David Furlow, retired trial appellate and First Amendment lawyer, Founder and Emeritus editor of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society Journal, Trustee Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, elected member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and member of the Pilgrim Hall Museum Board of Trustees. David and his wife Lisa Pennington are currently writing a biography of Mayflower Pilgrim Isaac Allerton and the Allerton family.

This history book tells the story of the Dutch colony of Manhattan revealing that it was a diverse, free trade society that shaped America’s multicultural identity before the English colonies arrived. This Dutch colony of New Netherlands challenges the traditional narrative of American origins. Originating from 12000 pages of the newly translated Dutch proves that its citizens valued free trade, individual rights, and religious liberty.
